In this role you will spread your time between leading projects, architecting solutions, contributing significant-quality software to our WordPress projects, and contributing to the effectiveness of our business in a wider sense by improving standards, efficiencies, solution design, teamwork and methodologies, and by giving thought leadership and peer review. You will enjoy the flexibility and variety to use your wide-ranging skills to deliver a diverse range of services.

You are likely to be an experienced developer with delivery capability above all else. On top of that, you may also have the ambition to broaden your expertise further such as through mentoring or managing people or helping the business adapt to new technologies and methodologies.

Role Responsibilities


  • Lead development, re-factoring and re-platforming of our key WordPress projects
  • Provide development, code and technical solutions for client issues/ requests.
  • Produce well-architected, high-quality, maintainable software aligned with our development standards.
  • Help evolve and improve our development standards company-wide.
  • Liaise with clients and other third parties to provide the service they require.
  • Influence the team throughout the software project lifecycle.
  • Maintain the quality of your own code whilst monitoring the output of others and providing feedback and suggestions when appropriate.
  • Work with our business development people to provide technical input for quotes and proposals.
  • Write and review specifications and other technical documentation as required.
  • Estimate time and costs for quotes and proposals.

  • Work with the project lead and other stakeholders to drive project progress.
  • Identify and manage risks to successful delivery.


  • Lead projects or new internal initiatives which bring benefit to our business competitiveness and effectiveness.
  • Have input in staff development conversations and initiatives.
  • Provide feedback and mentoring to colleagues and more junior members of staff through code reviews or other feedback loops.


  • Keep up to date with industry trends and developments to ensure you stay at the forefront of your expertise and we are able to keep improving and expanding the services our clients receive.

The type of person we expect will suit this role

Technically you will have:

  • A number of years of solid hands-on experience completing software builds in WordPress including deep expertise in PHP and custom coding.
  • Generating WordPress plugins to support site functionality and integrations.
  • Insight into the practical application of WordPress security practices, SSL, and secure forms.
  • Experience and demonstrable expertise in:
    • Full-stack building web-based software in WordPress
    • Databases and SQL, NoSQL
    • Caching, CDNs
    • Continuous Integration, version control, and automated testing frameworks
    • Secure coding techniques
    • Performance optimisation
    • Object-Oriented software development and design patterns
    • HTML, CSS, Javascript
    • Strong practical maths skills
    • I18N and L10N

Ideally you will have:

  • Experience having refactored larger legacy applications.
  • Expertise in PHP frameworks such as Symfony and Laravel.
  • Experience architecting for and deploying to cloud environments such as AWS, Azure,, Heroku.
  • Experience with Dev Ops and hosting.
  • Knowledge of javascript frameworks/libraries such as React, Vue, Angular.
  • Experience defining stories, tasks and backlogs.
  • Experience creating architecture and data diagrams and other technical documentation.

Interpersonally you will have:

  • Ability to work as part of a remotely dispersed team.
  • Ability to provide feedback and mentorship to others.
  • Good communication ability – written and verbal – in English.
